so this past thursday, i saw interpol at the grand olympic auditorium in los angeles. i went with two friends, adrian and liz. after driving down the 10 west, we got off los angeles street, and made our way to the venue.

the venue was in south (central) la.

liz decided to park the car in the little parking lot off to the side. we parked right by interpol's tour bus. hah. and found some girls loitering around, probably trying to catch a glimpse of one of the boys.

liz, adrian and i decided to go to the burger king across the street, where i ordered a cherry coke icee, and we sat around. it's really funny to see scene/indie/mod/whatever kids sitting around a south la burger king, looking painfully out of place, waiting for a show to begin.

fast forward to standing in line, chatting, staying warm, huddling under liz's umbrella and dancing. adrian wanted to go to the after party (i decided against it; after parties are usually lame) and liz wanted to get something to eat. we finally got inside the venue and realised adrian's not standing with us. we tell him we'll phone him after the show and get to our places.

blonde redhead where the openers and man, where they boring. i didn't like her voice or his voice and the acoustics inside the venue were a bit crap. blonde redhead's songs were far too slow for my liking and i only liked the one fast song they played. i saw people sleeping around me during their set.

finally, interpol came on at 10.30pm. they were fantastic, but the security inside were awful. played all my favourite songs, and i must say, the little girl in me screamed when i saw paul banks and dan kessler (especially when he got down on his knees!). i also saw jared leto, and felt the need to yell, "jordan catalano!" dont worry, i didnt.

the show overall was good. too many kroq fans for my liking (i think 'slow hands' got the biggest cheer from the crowd), but other than that, i liked the show. i would definitely see them again.

i've never really written a proper post on brian jonestown massacre, but whilst i was away on my 'hiatus', and after numerous viewings of dig!, i've come to the conclusion that this band is my fourth favourite band ever. that makes them sound a bit like they're thrown off to the side, but they're so fucking good that i just want to spread their genius all around for the whole world to consume.

started in 1991 in san francisco, brian jonestown massacre have been creating music feverishly. Methodrone was released in 1995. 1996 brought three full length albums: Their Satanic Majesties' Second Request, Take It From the Man! and Thank God For Mental Illness. Give It Back was released in 1997, Strung Out on Heaven in 1998, Bravery, Repetition & Noise - Evil 5 in 2001, ...And This is Our Music in 2003 and with a sort of best-of Tepid Peppermint Wonderland: a Retrospective. they also have a slew of eps and live songs.

although the original lineup has disolved (as shown in dig!), they're still very worth listening to and very worth going to see live.

why havent i gotten into sonic youth any sooner?
i'm sort of ashamed, since all my rock-snob friends just cream their collective undergarnments over this band and i, being the person who's so stuck on whatever she's listening to at the moment, didnt notice or care. now i know what i'm missing out on. this band is so noisy and definitely suits my tastes.

as i zip along the streets of los angeles, i notice a few things:

1. reading the newspaper whilst driving is never smart.
2. everyone is talking on their cellphones, no matter if it's handheld or that thing in your ear that makes you look like you are a looney and talking to yourself.
3. EVERYONE cuts you off.
4. you see a girl putting her face on in the rearview mirror much to your disdain. no wonder why she's hurrying to slather on that concealer!
5. the gas prices. last time i checked, it was $2.35 a gallon!
6. you can hear really bad rap/hip-hop being blasted out of a car stereo.

oh the list can go on and on. thankfully, i try to avoid the last item on the list by rolling up my windows and listening to MY own music.

which brings me to a gem that i found again in my record collection.

yes, i own that! i got it used for $1.99, which made me really proud.
now the movie was really good, no denying that. but the soundtrack reminds me so much of 1995, gasp. originally i bought the soundtrack because it had a radiohead track on there (ok ok, i admit it: i'm a radiohead geek!) and me, being the radiohead fangirl i am, just HAD to have the soundtrack. but as i got older, and as i listened to this cd even more, i realised that this soundtrack had some pretty good songs on the compilation! how did that escape me!? so now i regard this as one of my favourite soundtracks (i dont have very many, since i think they're a waste) along with one of my favourite movies.

need you around-smoking popes. this song was orginally on the band's sophmore effort, born to quit and the almighty morrissey liked the band. well, that was due cos he's a bit ego-manical (in the most charming way) and liked the band cos the singer had the same vocal style. anyway, a good song and one of my favourites.

change-lightning seeds (windows media player). this song...it's really good. i dont know too much about this band other then they were on the clueless soundtrack and i've always liked it.

alright-supergrass. AHHH. i love supergrass! when i first got the soundtrack, i was really pleased to see that this was on the listing. and it got me more into that band. bless.

fake plastic trees-radiohead. alas, it's not the version i was looking for, it was, however, the motive behind buying this soundtrack. the version on the cd was a really sweet acoustic version, but the album track will do. radiohead=brilliance.

alright, listen up. if you havent heard the unicorns yet, you're living underneath a rock. this band is one of the best bands i've heard in the past year. hailing from montreal and british columbia (yes people, they are canadian), these quirky guys have made one of my favourite albums in a while, who will cut our hair when we're gone?. i've mentioned that i had the priviledge of seeing them back in august with my good friend jackie. they played a great set, although it was in crummy anaheim, and made fun of disneyland. the unicorns can melt the hardest of hearts, proven with my sister. she now likes them after seeing the video for jellybones (quicktime). and even JACKIE liked them and purchased their album. i bought a shirt. and their album too. but anyway, the unicorns are an indie sensation and although this sounds really retarded (yeah it tops "indie sensation"), i think they're one of the best bands out of canada, along with death from above 1979.

i feel like i havent given adam green any love in this blog, which is really odd cos i definitely love this man. he was part of the moldy peaches, a hipster favourite. he was the boy singer. now he's branched off and did a solo thang, which was been absolutely great. his first album, garfield, was when he got out of the moldy peaches and was still home recording his stuff. very raw, very vulgar and entertaining. his second album, friends of mine is gorgeous. he has sonically and lyrically matured. his hit single, "jessica", caused quite a stir because it uses jessica simpson as a tool for everything mainstream in this world. he's quite simply fantastic. his new album, gemstones comes out in january 2005 and the first single will be "emily". when oh when can he put my name seleena in a song? "seleena"? hmph.

today graham coxon did a bbc radio interview (you'll need a real player for this). can i be fangirl and say "OMFG@!!@#$!@#?!#!@!"? cos i just did. HE COVERED THE FUCKING LIBERTINES. how brilliant is that?! he talked about about an art exhibit at the ICA in london, halloween with his kids and getting back with his former bandmates. this just made me smile like an insane girl:

On why he wanted to cover The Libertines:
"I'm very fond of them. I first heard this song in the car and I was like 'Wow! Who's this?' That was ages ago and it took ages to get their records, and now I listen to the records quite a lot. I think they capture some extremely good energy and interesting lyrics..."

remember when i said thatgraham coxon may re-join blur? well that's a rumour. according to mr coxon himself and bbc.uk.co, he is NOT rejoining the legendary band:

Radio 1 have spoken to Graham's record company who say the story's

They say Graham's in the process of booking studios to record his new

The record company have added "never say never".

Blur's bassist Alex James, as they're still good mates.

i'm probably going to get slagged for liking u2 (early u2 mind you!) but this bit of news was interesting:

PORTLAND, Ore. - A long-lost briefcase full of notes and lyrics that
were intended for the 1981 U2 album "October" has been returned, 23
years after it was stolen at a Portland concert.

U2 frontman Bono made the announcement Wednesday during an appearance
before the World Affairs Council of Oregon, saying the returned notes
were "an act of grace."

Bono had to rewrite the "October" lyrics in the studio, and band
members called it their worst recording experience. Though the record
was generally well-received, it didn't earn the praise of the band's
debut album, "Boy," or third album, "War."

The briefcase was returned by Cindy Harris, 44, who said she found it
in the attic of a rental home in Tacoma, Wash., in 1981. She said she
did not know the notes had been stolen until many years later, and
then she had no idea how to reach the band.

Her friend Danielle Rheaume spent much of the past year contacting
U2's management.

According to "Into the Heart," a book of stories about U2 songs, the
briefcase was stolen by some women who joined the band backstage at a
now-defunct Portland nightclub.

The band returned to Portland a few years after the theft and Bono
asked the audience if anyone knew about the briefcase. He repeated
the question when the band played at the Rose Garden arena in 2001.

i have recently discovered brian jonestown massacre. yes, i'm a bit late but whatever. i simply cannot get enough of them. especially "mary, please", "(david bowie i love you) since i was six" and "wisdom". they're so raw and sloppy and just fucking rock & roll. believe me, this type of music doesnt usually attract me, but i really like this band. the best thing about this band is that every single song is up on their site for free downloading. how fucking cool is that? other bands should take note. and you can access all their mp3s here. give 'em a listen. i suggest the albums take it to the man! and thank god for mental illness.

now, whilst i'm talking about the brian jonestown massacre, i feel i should also talk about the dandy warhols. yes, we're all aware of their rivalry. and i suppose others can really see it in the new movie DIG!, which mr anton newcomb of bjm does NOT want you to see. do it anway. but yes, i've been a fan of the dandys first and i have to admit, whilst i like them, i find that bjm is dirtier and more raw. just great. but you can hear the dandy's music (i believe you need a real player for that) and brush up on your dandys. or, you know, dont.

lately, i've been listening to a lot of jesus and mary chain. i'm starting to get into them again. i've noticed this trend. since my dad is really helpful in shaping my musical taste, i always find myself reverting back to 80s music and favouring it more so than my own. same thing with the stranglers, sparks and gang of four. i dont know why people get into a tizzy over bands like the killers who are obviously replicating 80s music.

oh and i missed the vmas. i dont think i missed much, except for franz ferdinand winning some break through thing.

i really, really want the this is new york book. also the other this is... books seem so lovely and gorgeous. ahhh someone buy them for me! help a poor student out!

p.s. IF I HEAR SOMEONE MENTION THEY LIKE A HARDCORE BAND ONE MORE TIME I WILL GO CRAZY. i hate hardcore, shut the fuck up please.

a man killed his friend over soup. ( via gothamist).
apparently, johnny pinado and mario chavez had been drinking and playing handball
all day before going to the deli to ge some soup. chavez wanted soup but pinado wrestled
and choked chavez to death. the soup was about $2 or $4.

unfortuantely, i wont be able to attend the air/sondre lerche/stereolab show. apparently, the $3 tickets are sold out but you can still purchase the $12.50 tickets. and dont you dare complain about parking! (thanks, kathie)

i'm really excited about the new liberines album. i heard it and it sounds ace. it comes out this tuesday but if you want, you can get your quick fix here (via stereogum).

if you like moving units, you can pre-order it. i personally think it's ok after hearing "available", but lets see how it goes.

and lastly, can anyone buy me this is new york or this is san fransisco?.
perhaps this is londonwould be just as nice.

so this is my first blog. it'll be a bit different
because this journal is public and i'm so used
to having a livejournal.
and what can i say? i succumb to peer pressure because darling
kathie talked
me into it.

so on thursday night, i made the trek up
to anaheim (downtown disney to be more specific)
to see the unicorns.
oh those quirky canadians! they can melt the hardest of hearts,
as i later found out in my sister. anyway, they were so different
and WEIRD and refreshing. but they were only the openers so i was
disappointed. the headliner was ben kweller
who always puts on a good show. i've seen him before back in may
and i feel like he gets better, but i couldnt spazz out to him like i could
with the unicorns.

i had never been to the anaheim house of blues and now
i realise why. i didnt like the location (c'mon, DOWNTOWN DISNEY?)
and the venue was really strict. 16 and under has to be accompanied
with an adult?! fortunately for me, i'm not 16 but that's really ridiculous.
apparently they charge to have your camera there too. either that or the
security guards are big bullies.

but yes, so if you're reading this, please leave my blog
with a few things:
-dont go to the anaheim house of blues
-if you do go, make sure you're over 16
-go see the unicorns
-the new guitar player for ben kweller's band has a rather
large ass. i'm not complaining.
